Article: International Whale Day

Journée internationale de la baleine

International Whale Day

February 19th is an international day dedicated to the protection of whales , these magnificent marine mammals that have been victims of hunting to the point of near extinction . Although their commercial hunting is now banned by the International Whaling Commission in many countries, a new and growing threat weighs on their survival: plastic pollution of the oceans.

Blue whales are the biggest consumers of plastic!

It is alarming to note that blue whales , among the largest creatures on our planet, are also the biggest consumers of plastic ! Research has highlighted the disastrous impact of ocean plastic pollution on these marine mammals . A team of American researchers revealed that blue whales ingest on average a staggering 10 million pieces of plastic per day ! This tragic phenomenon is mainly linked to their feeding habits. The whales feed at depths where the concentration of microplastics is particularly high (50 to 250 meters). Their diet is mainly composed of krill , a species similar to shrimp that has itself ingested plastic waste.

Little Cadors reuse ocean plastic

At Petits Cadors , aware of the urgency of the situation, we asked ourselves an essential question: "How could we, on our scale, actively participate in cleaning the oceans of plastic pollution ?" Our answer is concrete: we decided to fill our cushions with high-quality recycled plastic fiber , collected from the world's rivers . By doing this, we are helping to solve the problem at the source , because the recycled plastic we use is intercepted before reaching the ocean .

To illustrate our commitment, one ISIDOR cushion contains the equivalent of 7 to 8 recycled plastic bottles : a significant impact! Our HOMER cushion for the boat even contains 30!

Unusual information about whales

Did you know? Humpback whales sleep standing up! As marine mammals, whales need to breathe at the surface from time to time, even when they're sleeping! So they adopt a vertical position to surface more quickly. Surprising, right? What's certain is that at Petits Cadors, we nap horizontally and with a well-adapted cushion !
